I want to know why.

Is it the price? Is it because you think the pictures on my website are beautiful? Do you like my props? Is it my ‘style’? Did a friend refer you? Ever the niggling question in the back of my mind. Why did you choose me?

It isn’t the price. Let’s rule that out. My package prices are on the high end spectrum. I chose to price them in a way that allows me to spend a large amount of time with each client. From the first phone call, through the session, until the albums and wall hangings are in your home, including the many hours spent meticulously editing each pixel to perfection. So you didn’t choose me because I’m the cheapest. I’m not.

Maybe you looked at my website and liked the images in the portfolio? If so, I’m flattered. Thank you! Lots of thought and effort goes in to producing each image. But frankly, my fellow local photographer friends produce beautiful work too.

One mother of an adorable newborn girl, mentioned during the session that she loves my props. As it happens, I don’t use much in the way of props, in images. I like to focus on the child and use props to give a visual appeal to the image if necessary. It was a newborn session though, and for newborns, the right props do make a difference to the images. (While we’re talking about said props, if you are a photographer and are reading this, I’ll interrupt myself to say, get the real stuff. A knitted bonnet from AliExpress doesn’t come close to the quality of handmade custom props from local vendors. And a faux fur rug from TKMaxx will never photograph as nicely as a real flokati.) So maybe that client had a point. Yet I don’t think the particular bonnet or headband she liked, made her book with me. I find it hard to believe people choose a photographer based on their props.

Three questions ticked off and I’m non the wiser.

Style? ‘I like her style…’ No, I can’t imagine anyone saying that because, honestly, I don’t have a style. I’ve met some amazing photographers, some who have photographed my own family over the past few years. They all have their ‘style’. And that speciality is what made me choose them, and sometime travel a few hours, to be photographed by them. Suzi Mitchell from Little White Photography is a genius at what she does. Her studio is all white and all her images are superbly minimalistic. She’s nailed her style.

Then there’s the queen of fine art photography that is Paulina Duczman. Every image, a modern day Rembrandt. Anyone looking for perfection in a portrait, should choose her. It’s no wonder people travel to her from all over the world.

Luisa Dunn is a well known photographer in Australia, a pioneer in the field, and a master of colourful and creative newborn photography. Her wise advise taught me not to be fixated on creating a style. Because if yesterday’s client wanted dark and moody images, today’s client wants light and airy and tomorrow’s will want bold and colourful, I want to be there to provide whatever will make them love their photographs. So ‘Style’ wasn’t the reason you chose me. So I have a white room inspired by Suzi, I create fine art portraits inspired by Paulina, and whatever I am capable of in between.

Over time, I keep hearing the same thing from clients. They all say they ‘feel at ease’ in the studio. There’s no pressure. And I like that. If I have a goal in my work, it’s that the experience should be comfortable and relaxing all the way through. I want THIS to be the reason you book Blink!!

Flexibility is my middle name. I spend a large chunk of the week at the computer scheduling, rescheduling and again rescheduling sessions, so they take place at the most convenient time for you. If your child wakes up out of sorts, or unwell, an hour before the session, it is okay to call me and push it off. Because at the end of the day, all I want is the best possible results for you. At the same time, full sessions have no time limit. I am all yours on the day of your session! The flexible way things run here makes the entire process stress free.

So if you ever need to cancel and reschedule your session, even at short notice, please don’t fret.

I’m easy. 🙂
